Sigma Cognition joins Sustronics Project to develop AI algorithms that aid medical decision making

February 1, 2024. The Spanish company Sigma Cognition has joined the European research project Sustronics, which is supporting the development of sustainable electronic products. Sigma Cognition is developing Artificial Intelligence (AI) algorithms for the project that facilitate medical decision-making.

Sigma Cognition, in collaboration with Onalabs, Barcelona Institute of Microelectronics (IMB-CNM, CSIC) and Universitat Rovira i Virgili (URV), is working on a new field of commercial application. It involves the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) algorithms for processing e-Health data that support monitoring disease progression and aid in treatment decisions.
Cognition’s work focuses on researching the data acquired by a new smart patch, containing a non-invasive and environmentally friendly sweat sensor, developed by Onalabs together with IMB-CNM, CSIC and URV.

The aim is to provide data analysis to improve the lives of patients and to help doctors prevent problems before they occur. The initial use case is related to diabetes patients. With type 1 diabetes, patients do not produce any insulin. Insulin must be supplied in the appropriate measurement at all times, which may require between one and eight blood samples a day. An alternative to painful blood draws is a smart patch sweat sensor.

Additionally, by analysing the sensor performance and energy profile, Cognition hopes to reduce the power consumption of the reader device by 15% and extend the sensor lifetime by 20%. The smart patch will initially focus on diabetes, although there is scope to detect and monitor other biomarkers related to kidney diseases.

Sustronics Project

The Sustronic consortium is made up of 46 partners from 11 countries and involves large companies, SMEs, research organizations and universities from the entire electronics value chain and life cycle.

The project aims to become the most emblematic in Europe in the area of sustainable electronics. It has a budget of 30 million euros, of which approximately one third comes directly from the European Union through the KDT JU instrument.

Sustronics’ purpose is to bring the electronics industry closer to meeting the objectives of the Green Deal and, at the same time, improve the competitiveness of companies, their strategic autonomy and their compliance with the requirements of the upcoming EU legislation on sustainable products.
